Give the Gift of Anti-Aging For the Holidays!

Most people think of their looks when they think of aging, and while that's part of it, your immune system plays a large part in the "aging" of the body.

Keeping your immune system in tip top shape will enable your body to fight off free radicals (for example, bad cells like cancer cells) which will in turn help your body fight aging. You can strengthen the immune system by eating the right foods (see How To Strengthen Your Immune System) by ensuring you do some moderate exercise every day (walk around the block or take up an aerobics class) and taking antioxidants that will help your body fight colds/flu, infections, and free radicals.

Keep your looks AND your immune system in step by doing these three things and you'll see and feel a difference that will add vitality to your life.

Fitness For Any Age!

Well, Hello, and I hope everyone is doing well today.

I'm back here today because it's coming up to my Granny's (I mention her at the beginning of this blog) birthday and because we always had such a HUGE birthday bash for her every year, her birth date is very easy for me to remember.

Every year she would tell us, "Invite everyone! You never know if it's my last one!". Goodness, Granny told us that AT LEAST 20 times! Personally, I think it was her excuse to just have a big bash where everyone paid her plenty of attention that one time a year. It was always so much FUN and Granny loved getting presents.

I digress, (but the memories are wonderful) the point is Granny never let herself FEEL old! She walked every day and she stayed busy. She visited her friends, she made sure that socially she always had a calendar that was full, she shopped, she was just so unstoppable.

Her "attitude" kept her YOUNG! Staying busy kept her body YOUNG! There are lessons to be learned when we know people like her!

Those old corny sayings like "you are only as old as you feel" are the TRUTH! If people would just pay attention and try to incorporate some of those truths in their lives, everyone would be happier and YOUNGER!

My Mom, bless her soul, just has never had the attitude that my granny had. She's only 71, but has been "old" for well over 20 years now. Her health is not good, her mental sharpness could be better, she's not happy with her life. I try to get her to do things, to go places, to smile, and just MOVE A LITTLE, but her excuse is that "she's getting older and her body can't do things she used to". Yes, to an extent that is true, but not wholly. If I could just get her to see what I really mean when I try to get her to do things with me, but she doesn't want to. She's closed her mind and doesn't want to hear it.

I love my Mom, really and truly, but WHEN I decide to get older, I'm going to want to be like Granny, NOT my Mom. I want to be full of life right up to the end, not sitting on a rocking chair in the living room watching the cars go past through the bay window.

Who do YOU want to be like? Are you taking the steps to attain those goals? Do you walk everyday? Are you doing some strength training and eating the right foods? Do you have the mental disposition that your head and your attitude CAN rule your body?

Think about it. As for me, I'm definitely going to be like Granny! :)

Enjoy life, Folks!

Elderly Fitness - Physical and Mental

OK, the first thing I have to say is that I think (and many others do, too!) that the word “old” is relative!

When you are 5 years old and you look at Mom and Dad, you think they are OLD!

When you are 18 years old and graduating, someone in their 30’s is the next generation!

When you are 30 years old, you think it will be forever before you turn 50!

How about when you hit that 50 mark? Don’t you think that you are still invincible? That you aren’t old yet?

Heck, yes!

Maybe it was because I had such a great role model when I was growing up, but age is relative to me! That saying “you are only as old as you feel” is such a golden nugget. WHY would you LET yourself “feel” old if you still have plenty of oomph and sass in you? If you start “feeling” like you are getting old, make the necessary changes. Take charge of your life!

My grandmother on my dad’s side was 70 years old and still driving all over the place (and, yes, she had a valid driver’s license!) with her friends on a daily basis. She had to sit on a cushion to see over the driver’s wheel, but nothing was going to stop her from getting to where she needed to be when she felt like it. By golly, she was independent and she let everyone know it!

I remember being around 10 years old when I heard her make the comment to my mom, “Jean, I’m not old! The ones I cart around are the old ones!”

The ones my grandmother “carted” around were her exact age, and a few of them were younger.

You are only as young as you feel! Remember that!

Now Grammy may not have always had the best diet, she loved her sweets and she loved her liquor, not to mention she smoked a pack a day, but she was active until the very end (98 years of experience). She was a first class bargain shopper, she knew the location of every single flea market in the surrounding towns, hit every yard sale EVERY single weekend, and went to clubs on the weekends where she could out dance most of the 20 something’s out there. She was so friendly and outgoing, so outrageous and non stoppable, that no one had a clue how old she was. After all, she certainly didn’t ACT like it!

In her mind, she wasn’t old, so why ACT old? Why let yourself FEEL old?

Moderate exercise certainly helped my Grammy maintain her attitude right up until the age of 98. She walked, and walked, and walked every day! She certainly didn’t let a little thing like age and short legs get the best of her, she was always on the move. I’ve always attributed her attitude and enthusiasm for life as the reason she was always on the go and I truly believe that the exercise kept her happy and motivated for so many years.

Years of experience brings wisdom and contentment in knowing who you are and what you’ve been through. We all have the choice of being happy with what we have or being unhappy and miserable.
Is it easier to smile or is it easier to frown.

Do we make the choice to correct lifetime habits to have a healthier mature life (exercise and/or diet) or do we just give up and say “it’s supposed to be like this when you get old” and give up on having a productive and enjoyable life? Just because you are getting more mature doesn’t mean that you still don’t have lots and lots of things to look forward to, to enjoy, and to appreciate.

I don’t know about you, but, me? I’m going to be like my Grammy and go out singing and dancing and having a grand old party every day of my life!

Won’t you join me?

Elderly Exercises - Keeping You Young!

Wow, what can I say?

I keep telling my Mom that the older I get, the younger everyone else seems to be getting! It's true, isn't it?

I don't FEEL old (I'm 47), but I'm now calling the 30 somethings "kids" when that term used to be used for teenagers. Whew, time sure does fly!

Anyways, I'm creating this blog because as I'm getting older, I want to ensure that I stay as fit as I can to stave off those common "old" problems that creep up as age advances and I'd like to hear from others who are doing the same thing. I also have my Mom, who is 71 (sorry, Mom), who I am trying to convince that exercising, even a little bit, would help her stay more limber and she'd sleep better. She doesn't want to listen to me, but I'm not a quitter, I'll get it through her one of these days. LOL

So, please, I'd love to hear from you and what is working for you and, maybe, the stuff that is NOT working for you. Keep checking back as I'll be submitting lots of articles relevant to this blog to the directories and I'll be posting those site addresses once they get approved.

Stay healthy and happy, Everyone!
Michelle
